Preserving a Legacy: The Vision for the Osborne Museum of the Democratic Spirit

In the heart of Auburn, Cayuga County, a historic treasure is poised for a transformation that aims to bridge the past with the future of democratic engagement. The Osborne Library, once a grand estate building and now a symbol of a rich regional history, is the subject of a bold new vision: the development of the Thomas Mott Osborne Museum of the Democratic Spirit.

Dedicated to the Osborne-Wright family and their circle of reformers, this self-sustaining museum and research center aims to explore the evolution of democratic ideals through the lives of Central New York’s influential historical figures.

The museum seeks to illuminate the "Corridor of Conscience"—a region centered in Auburn that was home to transformative leaders, including Martha Coffin Wright, Thomas Mott Osborne, and Harriet Tubman.

Institutional Values

Consistent with our core value of hope, The Osborne Center has three intended routes to attain our goals and spread our message.

Preservation

To save a vital piece of historic architecture from demolition and restore it as a space for scholarship, exhibition, and community engagement.

Education

To serve as a hub for students, researchers, and the public to explore the meaning of, hope, democracy, prison reform, women’s rights, and social advocacy.

Engagement

To inspire reflection and action by sharing the stories of those who championed equal opportunity for all, regardless of background.

Operational Goals

The project emphasizes sustainability through a diverse mix of revenue streams, including:

Educational Programming:

Hosting regional lectures, seminars, and an annual "Summit on Prison Reform & Democratic Spirit" to establish the center as a leadership hub.

Heritage Tourism:

Leveraging the region’s strong cultural tourism market by partnering with other historical sites, such as the Harriet Tubman Home and the William H. Seward House.

Digital Reach:

Producing podcasts and digital content to broaden the audience and keep the history relevant to contemporary audiences.

By carefully balancing these activities, the museum aims to transform from a historic structure into a dynamic, mission-driven institution that honors the Osborne-Wright legacy while actively contributing to modern discussions on justice, equity, and democracy.
